The team of Penelope-Gandhi mission implements various actions that include visits, discussions and exchange of knowledge, recordings of these meetings and of the narratives as well as of the preservation of these textiles. Exhibitions and innovative teaching interventions in primary and secondary education in Crete run in parallel with the publication of the Penelope-Gandhi findings.
The first action officially took place in November 1, 2012, with a 15-day Exhibition-Interaction, in the Heraklion St. Marcus Basilica. During the exhibition folk weavers were weaving in four looms, one from each prefecture of Crete. All the stages leading to the creation of handwoven textiles were presented. The beginning of the process is at the land with the eventual creation of the natural (cotton, silk or flax) yarn and its colouring with natural colours. The weavers do not measure their work in paid-hours as this expresses their existence, their life, their breath as well as the pain, the song and the glory.
The team of the Penelope-Gandhi mission further organized, talks and study groups under the guidance of the great Hellene Ms. Hélène Glykatzi-Ahrweiler. In addition, distinguished personalities from India, Persia (Iran) and Palestine compared and pointed at the common patterns used in weaving in Crete and in their own countries.
